This week’s Island of the Week is Thassos. We put it in our Outstanding Oddballs as it doesn’t fit with many other islands, despite being in the North Aegean just off the coast of the Macedonian region. Similar to Corfu and Skiathos in that it is luscious and green, covered in pine forests yet it is far less busy than them. It is perfect for families and those looking to relax or get involved in activities. In this blog we’ll take you through our favourite 5 things to do on this picturesque island, yet there is so much that is worth doing, we would be here all day otherwise. How to get there To get to Thassos you need to fly into Kavala, which is in the northern Macedonian region of Greece. You can fly into Kavala directly from Birmingham, London Gatwick and Manchester. From Kavala you then transfer by ferry to Thassos, in the summer these ferries run hourly (and the journey only takes 40 minutes). 1 – Thassos Archaeological Museum Located in Thassos Town, the archaeological museum in Thassos is one of the largest in East Macedonia and Thrace. With 18 galleries it covers from the Neolithic Period to the 7th Century AD. During antiquity Thassos had a large marble quarry and gold and silver mines. Many of the pieces in the museum come from this period as well as archaeological sites from across the island and on the mainland. Very near to the museum is the ruins of the ancient city of Thassos, the main part of what is left is the theatre which is mostly intact and is great for history enthusiasts and gives you stunning views out to sea. 2 – Aliki Sticking with the archaeological theme, Aliki is a peninsula on the south of the island which was home to the main marble quarries on the island. As mentioned earlier, Thassos was one of the largest producers of marble in ancient times and this quarry operated for over 1,200 years. Also at the site are the foundations and a number of walls from the settlements that surrounded the quarries. Just to the east of the archaeological site is Akili beach, tucked in a cove next to the peninsula it has both sand and pebble elements and its waters are shimmering and blue. 3 – Take part in some Watersports As we’ve shown in part, Thassos is home to a number of beaches both sandy or pebble. The waters off these beaches are glistening and blue which make them perfect for snorkeling. If you’re a certified diver, one of three dive centres can take you to a number of great underwater locations such as an underwater cavern or shipwrecks. Watersports can be done at many of Thassos’s beaches such as Golden Beach and Pachis. 4 – Giola Lagoon Located on the south of the island, this pool was naturally created, yet could be mistaken for an infinity pool. With crystal clear waters, this pool has been cut out of the rock over time to create a beautiful place to swim with a breathtaking view. To get to it you will have to walk from a nearby beach as there is not a carpark next to it. 5- Go Hiking Thassos’s stunning scenery makes it great for hiking and it is one of the most popular activities on the island. One of the best and most popular routes is hiking up to Ypsarion Mountain. Located in the centre of the island, each step only increases the beauty of your view and when you reach the top you have a 360 view of the whole island. There are a variety of other routes which can take you to towns and beaches if you fancy something a bit more comfortable. We hope this has helped you see what Thassos has to offer and has helped you decide what to do if you’re staying there.
