The amazing Argo-Saronic islands are the closest chain of islands to Athens and are served by frequent ferries from the port of Piraeus.
Very popular at weekends with Athenians looking to escape the hubbub of the city, and the islands all have something very different to offer and with such short ferry journey times are even ideal for long weekends away.

Which island will you choose?

Just 40 minutes from Piraeus by hydrofoil, Aegina is a popular getaway for both day-trippers and weekend visitors from Athens. Its proximity keeps accommodation and tavernas high in standard, while prices remain reasonable.
The main town features a colourful waterfront lined with tavernas serving fresh fish, while narrow streets and neoclassical buildings invite exploration. History lovers will enjoy the Temple of Athena Aphaia, the medieval village of Paleochora, and the Monastery of Agios Nektarios. Beaches on the island are mostly organised, yet hidden coves offer quieter spots for those seeking peace. Due to its popularity, booking in advance is recommended. Poros is made up of two islands connected by a small bridge—Kalavria, covered in pine and olive trees with secluded coves, and Spheria, home to Poros Town. The waterfront buzzes with tavernas, cafes, shops, and lively nightspots, while the landmark white clock tower offers stunning sunset views over the town.
The island’s best beach is Askeli, a Blue Flag beach with gentle shelving waters, easily reached by foot, taxi, or bus. Its proximity to the Peloponnese also makes day trips to Galatas, Epidavros, and Nafplion simple and convenient. |
Agistri
Just 55 minutes from Piraeus, Agistri is a small, pine-covered island of only 13 square kilometres. Its size makes it easy to explore, with just three settlements connected by a bus service. Skala is the most popular, boasting a sandy beach and a variety of tavernas, cafés, and shops.
Close to Athens, the island can get busy in summer, but it remains excellent value, with friendly locals and laid-back charm. The turquoise waters, particularly in Aponisi Bay, are often likened to the Caribbean. Its proximity to the mainland also makes day trips easy, and Aegina is just a 10-minute ride away by sea-taxi or hydrofoil. Spetses
Spetses is a chic retreat popular with wealthy Athenians, evident from the yachts in the marina and discreet walled villas. Private cars are banned, so locals and visitors get around by buses, taxis, bikes, or horse-drawn carriages.
The main town is elegant, with whitewashed mansions draped in bougainvillea, wide squares, and a variety of restaurants and bars. The island has also been a filming location for movies such as Glass Onion and The Lost Daughter. At just 10 miles square, a coastal road provides access to the island’s beaches, particularly those in the south. Visit in September for the Armata Festival, a unique celebration featuring the burning of a boat to commemorate a naval battle. |
Hydra
Step off the boat at Hydra and the first thing you notice is the silence—no traffic, just the sound of the harbour and the chatter of fellow visitors. Donkeys carry luggage to hotels, adding to the island’s unique charm that has drawn celebrities like Leonard Cohen, Mick Jagger, Pink Floyd, and Sophia Loren over the years.
The amphitheatrical harbour is lined with yachts, tavernas, restaurants, and bars, creating a lively yet relaxed atmosphere. Hydra isn’t known for sandy beaches—the shoreline is mostly pebbled—but excursion boats depart from the port, stopping at the scattered beaches along the coast. Vlychos is considered the best, with tavernas offering refreshments and a peaceful spot to relax. |

Happy People
The team have booked three very different holidays for me, two for a couple and one for a group of nine. They listened to our requirements and used their expert knowledge of Greece to provide us with several options from which to choose. I found them to be very professional, nothing is too much trouble and they strive to find a good deal. I would not hesitate to recommend them. The business has booked me a few different holidays ranging from 2 weeks away in the sun to City Breaks. They have a great knowledge and understanding of your needs and requirements when booking a holiday. They always try to accommodate your budget and work extremely hard to get you what you're asking for. They have an extremely good knowledge of the Greek Islands and never fail when recommending specific places. I would always recommend the team as they are helpful and professional at all times. |
Fantastic service. I explained what kind of holiday I was looking for and my budget and they came up with different options to choose from. Nothing was too much trouble and the communication was first class. I would definitely recommend and would not hesitate in using this 5 star service again.
