Where was Mamma Mia filmed? The instant answers will be Skiathos, those who think slightly will say Skopelos.
The real answer is that whilst the ferry quay shot was in Skiathos and the famous run to the church by Meryl Streep was in Skopelos, the majority of the film was actually shot in Pelion, in a little village called Damouchari.
Pelion is a wild, mountainous peninsula that until recently was only served by a weekly charter flight which stopped at Skiathos first. Now Easyjet have started direct services, it could entice more visitors.
And it deserves to – there are some wonderful seaside villages with a variety of accommodation to suit all tastes.
If you are feeling adventurous then head to Ano Lehonia to take the old train up to Milies, high in the hills away from the beaches and wander the lanes of this fascinating village.
Pelion is real Greece, where tourists are a welcome addition but the main income is from the land and the sea.
Get out and explore – there certainly is plenty to see!
