Athens has it all – the history, the drama, Ancient Greece, the Olympics, and more. Modern-day Athens makes for a great city break, especially with low-cost flights now available.
It doesn’t even have to be summer as temperatures often reach the 20s as late as November. In addition to traditional sites like the Acropolis, Parthenon, Syntagma Square, and Monisteraki, Athens has experienced regeneration in areas like Gazi, Kolonaki, and Kifissia, now the places to be seen. Just north of Athens, coastal towns like Nea Makri with its waterside cafes and tavernas make for an enjoyable day out. Modern winebars, a variety of restaurants, and off-season accommodation deals give you plenty of options. The Athenian Riviera is a playground for the rich and famous, with 50 kilometres of fantastic beaches, chic towns, and great public transport. Cape Sounion, with the Temple of Poseidon, offers stunning views for sunrise or sunset. Alimos, Glyfada, Vouliagmeni, Varkiza, and more offer the perfect mix of swimming, shopping, dining, and nightlife. If you're a golfing fan, the Glyfada Golf Club is also nearby. Asteras Vouliagmenas is the star beach, the place to be seen since 1959. |
