A fan of Pink Floyd or someone who watches Oscar nominations/winners closely may think they have heard of the name Kastellorizo before. They would be right.
David Gilmour of Pink Floyd fame, wrote a song named after the island, and the film Mediterraneo received 10 Oscar nominations and won best foreign language film.
To be honest, once you are here it is easy to see why. Kastellorizo or "Kazzie" to its followers is out on a limb. With closer relationships to the Turkish mainland less than a mile away than to Athens, it remains staunchly Greek unless it suits the locals for trading. a four hour ferry journey or 30 minute flight brings you to this backwater.
There are no real beaches as such, you swim in the harbour with the turtles that make it their home. The only time you don't swim is when the ferry comes in a few times per week.
The rules seem simple enough and the locals make you feel so special. Wandering around you get a wonderous feeling of days gone by, when Kazzie had a population of 10,000 - nowadays it is around 500 and it was the largest port in the eastern Mediterranean.
Don't miss out on Kazzie's very own Blue Grotto. Small boats will take you from the harbour and you have to crouch down in the boat as you enter the cave with the most amazing blue colours.
Please be aware that due to flight and ferry timings, a stay overnight in Rhodes may be required in either direction.
