Eastern Crete is more aimed at the mass tourist market with the major airport at Heraklion being the gateway.
The capital city of the whole island has ancient heritage sites, top of the range clothes shops and great bars for nightlife.
Many of the resorts along the north-east coast have great nightlife but that is not all what Crete is about.
The Palace of Knossos is one of the biggest attractions with its legends of Minotaurs, there is the Thalassokosmos Aquarium and Spinalonga, the former leper colony both well worth a visit as well.
The east of Crete can also offer a bit of sophistication with some of the best hotels in Europe, never mind Greece, being located in the Elounda area.
Head even further east towards Sitia and you start to find the real Crete again with more of the traditional tavernas and accommodation showing through.
